Twenty-two portraits from the Wolseley family, whose ancestral home was Wolseley Hall near Rugeley, are due to go under the hammer on Tuesday 3 November.

Batemans Auctioneers says the collection has been kept in storage for many years and is now being offered in its Curated & Collectable Sale, with a combined estimate of £50,000 to £70,000.

The paintings provide a link to the people whose portraits once hung at Wolseley Hall in Colwich, near Rugeley.

Portraits spanning generations

Among the highlights is a pair of 1778 pastel portraits of Sir William Wolseley and Lady Charlotte Wolseley by John Russell. The auctioneer has estimated the pair, lot 173, at £15,000 to £25,000.

A 17th-century portrait of Sir Robert Wolseley, the first baronet, is offered as lot 169 with an estimate of £4,000 to £6,000.

The collection also includes a portrait of Field Marshal Garnet Wolseley by William Alan Menzies, after E. Fuchs. Lot 162 carries an estimate of £1,000 to £2,000.

Greg Bateman, managing director and senior valuer at Batemans, said the collection brought together changing fashions, personalities and family fortunes across the generations.
