Two primary schools in Cannock Chase have been awarded national recognition for their work protecting bumblebees and other pollinators. St Peter's Primary School has achieved Gold Status, becoming the first school in the district to reach this level. Chancel Primary School has secured Silver Status in the Bumblebee Friendly Schools Programme.
What is the Bumblebee Friendly Schools Programme?
The initiative is run by Cannock Chase District Council in partnership with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust. It teaches pupils about pollinators and biodiversity through practical learning.
A total of 13 schools across the district have signed up to the programme. Council officers and volunteers from the Bumblebee Conservation Trust have visited schools to deliver workshops. These sessions teach children practical ways to support bees in their school grounds and at home.
Council praise for schools' efforts
Councillor Richard Craddock, Deputy Leader at Cannock Chase Council, praised the schools' "enthusiasm, creativity, and commitment to supporting nature". He said he looks forward to seeing more schools progress through the award levels.
